Puerto Rican Events in MA
One of the biggest event in Massachusetts is the Puerto Rican Festival of Boston. It was created to unify the Puerto Rican community in the South Shore/greater Boston area, and in all of Massachusetts in general. People travel hundreds of miles to participate in this festival. It is three days long and consists of hours of dancing, music blaring, food being cooked on the street and sold by vendors, and little Knick-knacks being sold. It always takes place in the summer, and even though it only lasts 3 days, people continue the festival into their home towns.
Holy Ghost Feast and Festival
The Holy Ghost Festival is held every summer in Taunton, MA for 3 days. Primarily focused on the Portuguese population, they welcome anyone to join. Since there is no direct festival for the Puerto Ricans in Taunton, they have "tagged along" to this feast. There are carnival rides, homemade food, live music and dancing. It is mainly Portuguese based, but the Puerto Ricans add their own flare. The purpose of this festival is to conduct religious services, perform and encourage social and civic activities, do works of charity, establish and maintain a place of meeting, and most importantly, hold a Festa do Divino Espirito Santo (Feast of the Holy Ghost) on the second Sunday of July, and to give a free dinner in honor of the Divino Espirito Santo (Divine Holy Ghost) on that day.
